Awakening to Beauty, Power and Presence: This class explores Delsarte's warm up exercises for relaxation, and harmonic balance, revealing these three qualities in any person, regardless of age, size or gender. Beauty is harmonic movement, revealing the inner beauty in action. Power is strength and readiness made accessible by the leverage and relaxation of balanced movement. Presence is to be present in your entire body, cultivated by harmonic movement. This alignment warmup is a wonderful way to start the day, preparing us for whatever the afternoon has to offer.
Body language and the Artist: This seminar introduces students to some of the most basic elements of body language, as revealed by Delsarte. This is applicable not only to performance, but to all the arts, to business, communications, psychology, or any individual who would like to benefit from more knowledge of the self. We look at the common movement languages of forward and back, side to side, diagonals, curves, and some simple expressions of the angles of head movement. These are movements that we are using constantly. Do you know what they are communicating? Learn how to use them to fulfill your best intentions.
Arms and Hands: We will use the Delsarte analysis to study the parts of the arms, hands and fingers, with all their meanings and basic movements. From graceful, to powerful, to profoundly nuanced expression, we will see how the arms and hands can empower your art and communication. Your arms and hands are a universe of every emotion and human feeling. You will learn the symbolism of each and every part of them, many of their most fundamental expressive movements, and how to use them as a master artist. You will also learn an essential arm warm-up that unlocks their freedom and eliminates stiffness, while strengthening them technically.
Three Pillars Arts®" Principles of Gesture": Theater history has given so much attention to an idea of "Delsarte poses", that it is rarely, if at all, known that Delsarte studied and taught principles of motion and movement dynamics. In this class we explore Delsarte's "Nine Laws of Gesture": Force, Motion, Reaction, Sequence, Direction, Form, Altitude, Velocity, and Extension. You will see how all these movement qualities are born from specific internal conditions, and how they can inspire your creative work.
Performing with Props: Discover how to use the zones of the body and laws of gesture in your handling of any object, in order to give it meaning. In this class we will explore how your body and the space around your body contain meaning. This will allow us to see how both the way we hold props, and where we move them, give meaning to the prop, or communicate relationship to our audience.
