Series - Home Movies: Filmmakers Document Their Families
About
In Oxhide II, Liu Jiayins parents make dumplings around a cramped table with their daughter while discussing the family business. Despite this simple premise, a complex structural element is at play: there are only nine shots, each of which are fixed at a different 45-degree angle within a 2.35 frame. What might sound like a stunt is instead a warm, welcoming, and very funny film a record of a family at work, performing a simple task that is revealed, through the directors formal choices, to be as hypnotic, dramatic and involving as anything on a grander scale.
