Speaker Bio: Steve Clayton is currently serving as a contributing faculty member at the NewSchool of Architecture + Design in San Diego where he teaches in the Construction Management Department. He is bringing real world experiences to the classroom for tomorrow's building professionals. During his working career, he was affiliated with the San Diego Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute and served four terms on the Board of Directors. He worked with their Construction Document Technology certification program for professional development.
Steve retired from active construction management in January 2013 after more than 15 years serving Public Works Owners who utilized small businesses to complete their projects. Those projects involved residential sound insulation programs at airports across the country. He was the Senior Construction Manager for both O'Hare and Midway Airports' Residential Sound Insulation Program until 2004. That program was the largest in the USA, completing more than 1,500 homes each year. He became the Senior Construction Manager for the Jones-Payne Group in Boston, initiating his CM concepts for them on a national basis, prior to accepting the CM position at San Diego. By his own admission, he came to San Diego for the weather (and golf).
Steve has firsthand knowledge of the challenges small contractors face regarding financing, working capital needs, and the ever present need for completing the paperwork on time. His insights and methods of contract administration are critical in placing a contractor squarely on the road to success.
