STEWED ANGELS, CAROLINER ON TOUR
FEATURING: LIVING PROOF OF THE 1800's (1995) UNRELEASED TOUR DVD-R (200?)
Formed in San Francisco, in 1983, Caroliner is "a collective of a bunch of denizens modeled in pitchfork clay and dipped in cowhide puree" whose music apparently comes from the song book of an 18th century singing bull named, perhaps unsurprisingly, Caroliner.
Wielding an ever changing roster (including, at one point, Dame Darcy and members of Thinking Fellers Union 282, etc), bizarre pseudonyms and an uncomfortably mutating band name, Caroliner blends Harry Smith's dandruff, Link Wray's (at this point) busted legacy, and the sound of a turntable playing Stockhausen at 3 and a quarter rpms with intricate drawing, screen printing, and a thrifty material sense. They've released over a dozen albums and toured the US, Europe, and Japan. Their stage show is a mix of carnival haunted house rides and kabuki theatre with a rash of day-glow paint covering everything from the band to their (sometimes) homemade instruments.
Caroliner holds a special place in the heart of Spectacle and presenting these tour videos from two different realms of the band's career is a rare treat indeed. So what should you expect? Lots of black lights, wild costumes, kids-book style animation, confused crowds, and potential acid flashbacks. Viewers take note, these are not for the weak-hearted
