Zach Coulter with Goodrich Gevaart
Minnesota native Zach Coulter is just your typical bookstore comedian/rapper/folk storyteller. Winsome charm and outstanding rhythm animate his tales of mundane insanity. Since getting his start on the basement stages of the thriving Minneapolis comedy scene Coulter has gone on to perform in such exotic locales as St. Paul and Brainerd. Coulter was the winner of the 2011 ABSOLUT Funniest Comedian Contest, was voted 2011's Audience Favorite at Sample Night Live, and was a finalist in the House of Comedy's "Minny's Got Talent" contest as one half of the comedy/hip-hop duo Valley Meadows.
Goodrich Gevaart a relatively new stand-up originally from Indiana who came to comedy after playing in punk bands, explained to the small crowd that "this is what we call the 'live room,'" the place where musicians perform while the sound engineer records the result in a room adjacent.
He said he got into comedy for, unusually, "fiscal reasons," but it was already paying off: In a year of doing stand-up he's made about $15, he said, while in 10 years of playing in bands, he'd earned roughly "negative $15,000."
