About Lara Gastinger -
Lara Call Gastinger is a local botanical artist in Charlottesville. The subjects of her art are artifacts of the natural world and reveal detailed evidence of the natural processes of growth, reproduction, and decay. She finds inspiration in a carrot that has gone to flower, a broken seedpod, twisted roots or insect damage to a leaf. She strives to make a plant portrait in such a way that it reveals its character and uniqueness. Her focus on the small details and celebration of the everyday hopefully inspires others to look a bit deeper and linger a bit longer.
She is the chief illustrator for the recently published Flora of Virginia Project. This is a botanical reference manual that contains 1300 original illustrations by Ms. Gastinger. She has her undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Virginia and a masters degree in plant ecology from Virginia Tech. She is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists and has recently become a Rivanna Master Naturalist. Lara has exhibited in numerous national and international exhibits and at the Royal Horticultural Society garden show in London. She was awarded with the highest honor of a gold medal at the RHS show. Most recently, her work was accepted into the prestigious Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation.
