A Day With Brahms, Kodaly & Schumann
Sandy Eastman will be providing LLCC members with yet another opportunity to attend his pre-concert class and the symphony dress rehearsal for the San Luis Obispo Symphony concert coming up in March. The San Luis Obispo Symphony offers as a gift to the community free dress rehearsals of its concerts during the afternoon (1pm-3pm) preceding the evening of the performance. Join Sandy and the San Luis Symphony for the dress rehearsal of "Classics 4: Blooming Talent" at Classics in the Cohan featuring three pieces by three different composers: JS Brahms/ Variations on a Theme of Haydn Zoltan Kodaly/ Dances of Galanta Robert Schumann/ Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54 Guest conductor will be Giorgi Jordania, Conductor in Residence Tblisi State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre Tblisi, Georgia. Guest artist is his daughter Salome Jordania, a remarkable 14-year old Georgian pianist. A native of the Republic of Georgia, Salome and her father Giorgi first visited San Luis Obipso as guests of local teacher Dr. Botso Korisheli, also a native Georgian and founder of the Youth Symphony. Salome make her U.S. premiere performing with the SLO Youth Symphony in 2011 and is now returning to SLO as a soloist. This course will be in two parts. In the morning, there will be a lecture about the composers and about the pieces that are to be played in the rehearsal. In the afternoon, the class, as a group, attends the dress rehearsal of the performance. At the dress rehearsal SLO Symphony conductor Mike Nowak will speak as he conducts, giving background information, musicology, and note s on harmony. With Mike's broad knowledge and stage presence, the dress rehearsals are fairly comprehensive. Saturday, March 16, 2013. 9:00 - 11:00 am. for course, followed by symphony dress rehearsal 1:00 - 3:30 pm. The morning class will be at Ludwig Community Center, Room A. 864 Santa Rosa St. in SLO. The concert rehearsal will be in the Christopher Cohan Center in the PAC at Cal Poly. Silsby Eastman (Sandy) grew up and spent his working life in the Los Angeles area before moving to Pismo Beach. He has taught at Cuesta and Allan Hancock Colleges and has been playing bassoon, baritone saxophone, and bridge as often as possible. After graduating from Occidental College and Indiana University, he studied conducting bassoon with Walter Ritchie and conducting with Lauris Jones and Richard Lert. He served as a bandsman in the Air Force and taught in San Bernardino, La Canada, Paramount and Agoura Hills. He is also a former member of the Long Beach Coterie Sinfonique, the Pasadena Community Orchestra and the Topanga Symphony. Saturday, March 16, 9am- 11am and 1pm - 4pm Ludwig Center, SLO and Christopher Cohan Center at the PAC
