"FORENSIC ARCHITECTURE, DEFECT LITIGATION & DAMAGE CONTROL"
DATE: Thursday, February 28, 2013
SCHEDULE: 5:30 PM - Registration / Social Hour (Networking - Cocktails - Tabletops) 6:30 PM - Dinner followed by Program
This panel presentation is focused upon providing understanding and discernment about the "Art of Building Design" and the "Science of Building." Specific expertise in building envelope technologies and structural design will be shared. Specific examples of documentation drawings and specifications will be shared. Peer review methods will be discussed. A Q/A session will be provided, creating opportunity for participants to address unique or specific concerns related to the topics above, and/or to the general discussion.
Participants will gain an understanding of how design objectives and sound construction objectives often differ, and will learn techniques to allow them to "wear two hats" throughout various stages of the design and construction process.
Participants will gain an understanding of newly developed techniques to detail and specify waterproofing systems, and learn to identify areas of possible pitfalls.
Participants will gain an understanding of a recent 9th Circuit Court case decision where structural ductility played a significant role in catastrophic failure of building envelope and learn ways to avoid these issues.
Participants will gain an understanding of construction administration methods that can help ensure that artful building designs are conveyed to constructors within the means and methods suitable to the science of building.
Participants will learn how to utilize peer review to improve their documentation (both drawings and specifications) to develop their building science knowledge, and to reduce risk of costly litigation.
