Bluff Walk at Montana de Oro
This pleasant, relatively easy hike along a broad terrace overlooking the sea offers a chance to enjoy MontaƱa de Oro's lovely scenery and remarkable array of wildlife without much exertion. We'll cross a bridge, then follow a trail that crosses a broad meadow carpeted with hardy grasses, poppies and other native and non native plants. The views along the coast are magnificent, particularly from the bluffs above Coralina Cove. The cove contains rocky reefs which allow tidepool viewing at lower tides, and often boasts a population of harbor seals. We may also glimpse a sea otter floating on its back between the surf and the kelp line. There is less than a hundred feet of elevation change over the trail, making it suitable for hikers of all abilities. This is a 3.4-mile round trip hike. Rain cancels hike. Park in the parking area on Pecho Valley Road, just past the Montana de Oro Visitor Center and meet the group at the entrance to the trailhead. You will need to sign a LLCC waiver before the start of this hike. You may encounter poison oak, ticks, and, possibly, rattlesnakes on the trail. Long sleeves, a hat, sunscreen and sturdy shoes for walking an eneven terrain and exploring the tidepools are recommended. Dress in layers, as the weather can change frequently. Bring plenty of water and a snack. Binoculars and camera are also recommended Paul O'Connor and Barton Dennen are LLCC volunteers and long time local residents. As active trained docents they lead hikes and walks in coastal San Luis Obispo County, giving special emphasis to the native plants, geology and history of the surroundings. Paul has led this and other hikes for 5 years, after retiring from Cal Fire. Barton oversees volunteers with restoration work at the lighthouse, gives guided tours of the lighthouse and is on the lighthouse board. But, on special occasions, he leads hikes in San Luis Obispo county, giving emphasis to the native plants, geology and history of the surroundings.
