Second in the Cultivating Success series, this in-depth business planning course covers evaluating resources, planning and research, legal and management issues, marketing strategies, budgets and financial statements along with how to cultivate money resources.
WSU Snohomish County Extension in partnership with the WSU Small Farms Team, USDA, and Snohomish Conservation District will again offer Cultivating Success: Agricultural Entrepreneurship and Farm Business Planning to help new and current farmers gain skills in business planning and direct marketing.
New this year, thanks to a grant from the USDA, we'll be using web technology to simulcast the course between two Puget Sound locations so more students can participate closer to home. In addition, the course will be taught using the same updated curriculum in six other locations around the state.
The Puget Sound course runs Tuesday evenings January 14, 2014 through April 1, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. along with three Saturday seminars on focused topics. The central Puget Sound course will be held at WSU Snohomish County Extension's Cougar Auditorium in McCollum Park, 600 128th St SE, Everett, WA. In the south Puget Sound area, the course will be held at WSU Puyallup REC's Chicona Conference Room, 2606 W Pioneer, Puyallup, WA. The course features a full line-up of local guest speakers including bankers, business professionals, and successful farm owners with a special emphasis on the financial and legal issues unique to farm-based businesses. During the course, participants are guided in developing a business plan they can use to help finance and guide a new enterprise or expand an existing farm-based business.

The Puget Sound course facilitator is Angus beef rancher Holly Thompson, who has lead Cultivating Success courses for the past several years to excellent reviews. A WSU graduate in animal science and agriculture economics, Thompson has worked for Northwest Farm Credit Services as a loan officer and the Nestle Regional Training Center at Carnation Farm as their Public Relations and Conference Center Manager. She recently completed her MS in Agriculture Education through Washington State University.
Class size is limited and pre-paid registration is required. Cost for the twelve-week course is $275 for the Everett location, and $250 for the Puyallup location.
