On the Road to the Oscars with Jon Alpert
A DCTV PRESENTS MASTER CLASS

The race to the 2013 Oscars is in full swing. This hits very close to us at DCTV as our co-founder Jon Alpert and producer/director Matthew O'Neill have been nominated for their documentary short, Redemption.

A pioneer in guerilla video and a staple in cinéma vérité, Jon Alpert's career as an investigative reporter, producer, and documentary filmmaker has spanned over 40 years, creating work on diverse subjects and issues from domestic to international affairs, including gaining rare and exclusive access to Fidel Castro and Saddam Hussein. Yet it wasn't until these past few years that Jon's work has been recognized by The Academy with 5 films qualified (including Papa and No Contract, No Cookies: The Stella D'oro Strike), 3 shortlisted (including In Tahrir Square), and now 2 nominated (China's Unnatural Disaster and Redemption).

When nominated for China's Unnatural Disaster in 2010, Jon and our DCTV team had no experience in "Oscar-ing," and compared to most, admit to still being somewhat naive to the opaque politics and process of it all. However, this is not unique to DCTV. Independent filmmakers' ultimate struggle has always been and will most likely always be to find the delicate balance between the art of crafting meaningful stories and building recognition and audiences, whether it be through festivals, awards, broadcast, and/or distribution.

In true DCTV spirit, Jon will share his personal trials and tribulations in the completion and competition of an Oscar-worthy film, in order to demystify the process for others on a similar path. This is an incredibly unique opportunity for independent filmmakers to glean first-hand knowledge accumulated over four decades in just one intimate evening.

JON ALPERT:

DCTV Co-Founder and Co-Director is an award-wining Director/Producer. Jon Alpert has won three Primetime Emmy Awards, eleven News & Documentary Emmy Awards and one National Emmy for Sports Programming, as well as three Colombia DuPont Awards, two Overseas Press Club Awards, a Peabody Award and two Oscar nominations. Over the past forty years, Jon Alpert has received international acclaim for his intrepid work in such hot spots as Iraq (during the Gulf War and recently), Nicaragua, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Vietnam, Cuba, the former Soviet Union and the Philippines. More than a hundred of his reports from across the United States and around the world have been widely broadcast on HBO, NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS, ESPN, Canadian and Japanese major networks.
