Born out of the lakeshore city of Muskegon, Inside the Mitten is a moderated concert showcase of Michigan-based musical acts that have chosen to put their shared experiences of the peninsulas to music. Inside The Mitten was created and is hosted by Watermark Live with concerts held at Watermark 920. Artists are not chosen based on genre, rather they are chosen because they exhibit rare potential. We're proud of the amazing talent the Great Lakes State continues to produce and appreciate the opportunity to bring such esteemed artists home to our fair city. Whether already established like Paul Hoffman of Greensky Bluegrass, on the up and up like The Crane Wives, or lurking in the background ready to explode like Big Dudee Roo, Inside The Mitten's goal is to present a truly unique evening.
Inside The MItten was created to dig deep into what makes, sustains, and drives artists in the MItten state. The moderator for the evening tastefully interjects questions in between songs making the ITM experience truly unique and informative as well as FUN. Each concert is an intimate setting where concert goers have a great night out celebrating Michigan through music and Michigan made beer/wine as they get to know the bands and the stories behind their music.
THE STORY OF MUX REC In recent years, the music scene in Muskegon has begun to produce a fresh roster of hip/hop influenced atists. For this edition of Inside The MItten we are bringing the party home. We have chosen to feature a lineup of extremely talented acts from Muskegon's own MUX REC. MUX REC is a musical collective who has had a lot to do with this growing love of lyric driven, funk/rock infused music and we're proud to give them an opportunity to tell their story. In fact, Lou Jeannot, our moderator for the Inside The MItten series is a co-founder of the collective. These artists have helped manifest the change in the scene in a big way and we thought it was appropriate to recognize their achievements with an Inside The MItten performance. Noone tells a story like an MC.
Opening the evening are wordsmith's Malechai and Biffy The Beatslayer, a dynamic duo team up. You may remember Malechai from his electric performance last Winter at Inside The Mitten 2.2 with his band Homeless Poet. This time around he returns to the Inside The Mitten stage as his solo persona, Malechai. Complete with a fresh song book and a new lease on performing you will be blown away by Malechai's heartfelt lyrics and endearing stage presence. Joining him on stage is another key player in the MUX REC lineup, Biffy the Beatslayer. Biffy The Beat Slayer's got a tale to tell, and he ain't afraid to tell it. With the Mux Crew in tow, Biff put a mic in his fist and hit the stage, earning his due the hard way. Check out these two artists paired up on a track called "Sail"

Up next is a foundation act that's been on MUX REC's roster forever. Project Grizzly is new to the ITM series and we're excited to have them perform their unique blend of live instrumentation and hip shaking hip-hop. As their biography says, PG is a beast funky and smooth, raw and rugged. This live band hip hop act takes it back to a time when the lyrics were honest, with a bit of a twist. Equal parts cuddly and fierce, this bear just might maul your sister and she'll love it! Their song "Coastin'" IS Muskegon. Give it a listen here: http://projectgrizzly.muxrec.com/
Closing out the night in headliner position is their highness', King Crabapple, the rock on which MUX REC stands. Like most of us who come from Muskegon the band has a nose to the grindstone attitude. Calmly these musicians have been honing their craft to a fine Excalibur point. Voted as WGRD's 2012 live performer of the year, King Crabapple has been making Muskegon proud for years. A category they would have been just as fit to win is "hardest working act on the scene". We've watched these performers grind it out travelling all over the state winning over rooms through pure hands on sweat soaked performances. A 6 piece live hip hop ensemble, KCA sets themselves apart from the scene by embracing a bit of the feminine by featuring Julee Hackney on vocals. Get ready to groove along to some of the smoothest beats and smartest lyrics you have been exposed to in a long time. Here's proof, KCA's anthem "Muffins":
