Satomi Yarimizo Trio with Rob Sheps - Atherton Winter Season 2013
On Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 7:30 p.m., Satomi Yarimizo will present her quartet featuring special guest Rob Scheps on saxophone and flute; Satomi Yarimizo, piano; Stephen Jones, bass; and Darryl Pellegrini, drums. The theme of the evening is a Tribute to Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Satomi, now a fixture on the Honolulu jazz scene, is that rare artist who simply decided she wanted to play jazz -- and did! Her CD, Bop Tribal, released in 2008, won several distinguished awards.
Satomi Yarimizo started playing simple jazz/fusion by when she was 13. She already loved jazz, and in middle and high schools she did a lot of ensemble and arrangement work for piano and keyboard, and played fusion with her friends. Her former job at a computer company brought her to Hawaii in 2000, and she worked a couple of years with the company to make a computer-animated feature film. In March, 2004 she sat in on piano with a friend's jazz group at Rafters. She started to teach herself jazz theory and to sit in at local jazz venues in order to become a full-time musician, which is her real passion.
In 2005, a friend of hers and one of the greatest trumpet players, Tiger Okoshi, recommended her to come to his school, so she attended the intensive summer course at the Berklee College of Music in Boston to further enrich her understanding of jazz. She started gigging soon after she returned to Honolulu, and now regularly perform jazz between two and four nights a week at assorted venues with her duo, trio, quartet and quintet featuring various respected local musicians and visiting musicians such as Valery Ponomarev, Jacob Yoffee, Aaron Holbrook, Paul Carlon, Abe Lagrimas Jr., and Stafford Hunter. She has been house pianist of the Dragon Upstairs for 7 years, and Chuck's Cellar 8 years. She also plays regularly at Brasserie Du Vin and 53 By The Sea.
Her quintet group Bop Tribal released their first album in December 2008 and it won "Best Jazz Album Award" at the Hawaii Music Awards. They also got a 4-star review from Downbeat magazine in the June 2009 issue.
Rob Scheps (tenor saxophone/flute), a member of the faculty at the Mannes College of Music and multi-award winner, is one of the finest saxophonists of his generation with his own citation in the Encyclopedia of Jazz. He has toured or recorded with Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Gil Evans, Terumasa Hino, Victor Lewis, Joey Calderazzo, John Scofield, Linda Ronstadt, Buddy Rich, Mel Torme, Cecil Taylor, Louie Bellson, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, and PDQ Bach among many others. He has recorded on over 30 CDs with John Scofield, Duffy Jackson, Bob Moses, Nancy King, Glen Moore, Julius Hemphill, Sam Rivers, Onaje Allan Gumbs, Dmitri Matheny, Mike Formanek, Bob Hurst and Bobby Watson. His record labels include Blue Note, Gramavision, Milestone/Fantasy, Cardas, Northeastern,and Cadence. He has performed in Japan, Finland, France, Taiwan, Hawaii, Canada, Norway, Germany, Mexico, and the Carribean.
Stephen Jones (Bass/Composer/Arranger Recording Engineer /Educator) has been a life-long resident of Hawaii, with over 39 years of experience as a professional musician and over 15 years as a professional recording engineer. He has performed and recorded with local stars such as Jimmy Borges, Betty Loo Taylor, Jake Shimabukuro, Na Leo Pilimehana, Kapono Beamer, Kealii Reichel, Riatea Helm, Aaron Sala, Gabe Balatazar, The Matt Catingub Orchestra of Hawaii, and Amy Hanaiali'I Gilliom. He has also performed with Jazz greats such as Freddie Hubbard, Bobbie Hutcherson, Tiger Okoshi, Gene Harris, Ernie Watts, Bud Shank, Terumasa Hino, Natalie Cole, Michael McDonald, Aaron Neville and Monica Mancini. Currently he is performing with Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom and as a freelance bassist. In 1991 he branched out and began working as a producer / recording engineer. He is currently working with Bryan Kessler at Wire & Wood Music , a recording studio and music production company founded 1999. In 2004 he released his first solo recording "The Steve Jones Collective, Vol. 1."
Ohio native Darryl Pellegrini earned a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and Jazz Performance from Youngstown State University and his Masters Degree in Music Performance from Manhattan School of Music. Throughout his career in New York City, Darryl toured and performed with numerous jazz greats such as the Woody Herman Orchestra, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, John Faddis, Jack Wilkins, the Village Vanguard Orchestra, Milt Jackson, Clark Terry, Frank Wess, Frank Foster, Joe Lovano, Lew Tabackin, Chris Connor, Toshiko Akiyoshi, John and Bucky Pizzarelli and Harold Danko, just to name a few. He has also toured and recorded with Chuck Mangione, Mike Longo and the New York State of the Art Jazz Ensemble, and Scott Whitfield Big Band East.
In Hawaii, Darryl has performed with Boz Scaggs, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Natalie Cole, Aaron Neville, Mary Wilson, Rubin Studdard, Don Grusin, Larry Coryell, Lea Salonga, and has recorded and performed with The Matt Catingub Orchestra of Hawaii, and The Honolulu Symphony Pops Orchestra. He is currently touring and recording with Grammy nominee Amy Hanaiali'i and the Hawaii Symphony Pops Orchestra. After 20 years of freelance performing, teaching, subbing and touring for Broadway in such hits as The Lion King, Fosse, Swing, Kiss of the Spider Woman, 42nd Street, West Side Story, and City of Angels, and recording for numerous commercials, television shows, movies, and cartoons, Darryl now happily teaches, performs and resides in Hawaii with his wife and child.
