Rapture, Blister, Burn by Gina Gionfriddo
Rapture Blister Burn, a modern romantic drama with comedic overtones, opens at the Willits Community Theatre on February 16. Written by Gina Gionfriddo and directed by WCT veteran Mike ADair, the play provides an unflinching look at gender politics in the wake of 20th Century feminist ideals. The main action brings together two women, former schoolmates who have gone separate paths in lifeCatherine who is a womens studies professor and talk-show hit, and Gwen who is a stay-at-home mom who built a family with her husband.
After decades, both women are unfulfilled, each in her opposite way, and each woman deeply covets the others life. When Catherine begins having an affair with Gwens husband Don, the action turns unforgettable. With playwright Gionfriddos trademark wit and searing insights, the play explores important ideas for what constitutes happiness for women and what they want from men. The play was a 2013 finalist for the Pulitizer Prize in drama. Director ADair says, Its a very intelligent play about how women can be feminists and also have a personal life that involves men.
Staring in the WCT production are: Maheanani Phillips as Catherine who appears vulnerable over the shortcomings in her personal life and ready to take a chance at romance; and Crystal Nezgoda as Gwen who is unhappy in her marriage and a recovering alcoholic looking critically at her life choices. Also appearing in the play are Colby Friend as Gwens cynical, pot-smoking husband Don, Ilena Pegan as a staunch feminist college student, and Virginia Hanley as Catherines mom, a voice from the older days who covets how things used to be for women. This first play in the WCT main stage line-up for 2018 is sure to be an engaging and timely kick-off for the new season.
The production will run for three weeks from February 16 to March 4. Advance tickets are available in person at Mazahar, 38 S. Main St., Willits; online at brownpapertickets.com; or by phone 24/7 at 1-800-838-3006. Tickets will also available at the door until sold out. The WCT playhouse is located at 37 W.
