The Madwoman of Chaillot
The Madwoman of Chaillot by Jean Giraudoux
Directed by Jane Nichols
February 22-25 & 28-March 4, 2018 Preview: February 21, 2018 Opening: February 22, 2018 WednesdaySaturday at 7:30 PM and Sundays at 2:00 PM
How can you bear to live in a world where there is unhappiness?, asks the Madwoman.
She cant. So she devises before our eyes strategies to rid the world of all the thieves ofhappiness. Figurative thieves - age, unrequited love, death, fear - get as much playing time
in this brilliant mash-up of reality and fantasy, comedy and tragedy as the literal stock in trade thieves - self-serving politicians, greedy bankers, desperate hangers-on, a villainous prospector willing to murder anyone obstructing his path to profit - and oil!
Civilization gets in our way all the time, he bemoans. That civilization, comprised of vagabonds, street singers, ragpickers, waitresses and jugglers, sewer
cleaners, and deluded old ladies ultimately rids this make-believe universe of its villains, landing us squarely in the lap of shameless love. And delight. But not without a lasting trace of melancholy. And a final cautionary note: Hurry, before its too late!
