Master Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra May concert
The MSCO May concert starts with the Overture to Der Freischutz (the "Marksman" or "Freeshooter"). Der Freischutz is considered the first important German romantic opera, and this overture has justifiably become a standard at symphonic concerts.
Then San Francisco Symphony violinist Florin Parvulescu performs Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor. This concerto has become one of the world's finest and most popular violin concertos, despite the fact that neither Max Bruch nor his family ever received any payment for it.
The concert concludes with Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, called the "Rhenish". This title was added by the publisher, to whom Schumann had said that it "mirrors here and there something of Rhenish life".
