The Last Days of Pompeii
Anything But Silent: Silent Classics with Live Music Live Musical Accompaniment by Ben Model on the Cinema's Miditzer Theater Organ!
New Restored 35mm Print! Based on Edward Bulwer-Lytton's incredibly popular 19th-century historical novel of the same title, The Last Days of Pompeii centers on the adventures of Glaucus, a young dandy, the blind flower-girl Nydia, and sinister Egyptian priest, Arbaces, in the days leading up to the devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Filmmakers Carmine Gallone and Amleto Palermi spared no effort in bringing the epic decadence of ancient Rome to the silver screen. Italy's most expensive production up to that point, the film features extravagant sets and photography re-envisioning a standing Pompeii. The volcano's annihilative mayhem is one of the grandest examples of cinema's fascination with the legendary natural disaster. Don't miss this rare screening of the famed Italian classic. (Italy 1926, 144 min., tinted b/w, silent, 35 mm new restored print from the British Film Institute - Director: Carmine Gallone and Amleto Palermi - Cast: Victor Varconi, Rina De Liguoro, MarĂa Corda)
