Garlic Is As Good As Ten Mothers
A wild and impressionistic look at the "stinking rose," as told by chefs, historians, and garlic lovers. Les Blank's 1980 film documents Alice Waters' efforts to include ever more garlicky dishes at her popular annual Bastille day garlic festival; profiles a flamenco dancer's musical love affair with the herb; and includes classic footage from the Gilroy Garlic Festival. Even filmmaker Werner Herzog makes an appearance to explain why he didn't include garlic in his classic vampire film, Nosferatu.
Alice Waters will be on hand to introduce the film and talk about what has - and hasn't! - changed in Bay Area food culture over the past 30 years.
