Three Days of Rain
A year after he disappeared on the day of his father's funeral, Walker Janeway returns to New York. He takes up temporary residence in the unused space where, thirty-five years earlier, his father, Ned, and Ned's late partner, Theo, both architects, lived and designed the great house that would make them famous. Sleepless and emotionally jangled, Walker scours the place for clues to the tortured family history. He discovers his father's journal hidden under the bed and finds it as silent as his late father had been. Walker is joined by his sister, Nan, and Theo's son Pip, to hear the reading of Ned's will, where Walker forces the confrontation with the others. After an evening of harrowing and sometimes comic revelations, Walker disappears again, returning later the same evening with a surprising but - he feels - definitive solution to the family puzzle. Now we travel back in time, to 1960, when Ned's mysterious journal begins, to meet Ned, who seems very different from the cold monster of Walker's recollection, and the charismatic and putative genius, Theo; and Lena, who will become Walker and Nan's mother, a delightful, troubled Southern woman who 'admits to thirty.' An alternative ending to the history conjured by Ned is revealed as well as a clue to the meaning of a furtive scribble in Ned's journal: 'three days of rain."
