Broadway Chamber Players - Urban Fado Project
Broadway Chamber Players welcomes Mary Ann McSweeney and her Urban Fado Project. Friday, February 6, 2018 6:00 p.m. St. Malachy's The Actors' Chapel 239 W 49th St, NY NY 10019 (between Broadway & 8th Ave)
As we begin our 2018, we continue featuring music from around the world which has influenced society today. Long time Broadway and jazz bassist, Mary Ann McSweeney will perform a deeply personal program influenced by her own family's past. The beautiful melodies of Fado resonated for me immediately. My great great great Grandparents are from Portugal. This music originated in Portugal around in the 1800s. The sadness, the sigh of the voice, the story of fate told by the singer inspired me to compose music that is Fado. Images and smells of Portugal have surrounded my process. The music is heard in alleys, clubs and concert halls telling a story of the Portuguese people. The string bass brings a melodic and low supportive voice to the music. I like to keep the form of the traditional Fado song, but I have also expanded it to leave room for improvisation. Musicians can layer their voice onto the form of the piece. Being a long time jazz artist, I bring new grooves and new chord structures to the Fado form. I want to bring a new voice and vibe to this music and share the cultural diversity it has to offer. - Mary Ann McSweeney
