Afro-Cuban songs of the Yoruba people has been preserved in Cuba by the Lukumí descendants, and traditionalists for hundreds of years. Starting in the 1500's, Spain brought over a million Africans to work, for no pay, at the sugar cane plantations in the island of Cuba. Ever since, Afro-Cuban songs and prayers have been orally shared, and preserved throughout Cuba. Orisha songs will continue to be preserved, and will continue to evolve for many generations to come. The origins of Yoruba culture is presently located in Nigeria, in West Africa. Other genre of Afro-Cuban music includes African cultures originating in Congo, and Dahomey lands.
Recording artist Virginia López is also a percussionist, and she will teach Afro-Cuban songs in relationship to clave patterns, drums, and bell patterns. Virginia has been teaching songs and conga drum rhythms in Portland, Oregon for several decades.
Cuban born (also raised, educated, and indoctrinated) Virginia López is a Yemayá Priestess in the Lucumí tradition. Virginia's Beloved Godmother, Amelia Pedroso,<< ibbaé bayen tonú>> initiated Virginia López in 1999, in Havana, Cuba. Aché!!
