Please join us in welcoming internationally renowned activist, environmentalist, and farmer, Winona LaDuke to Vashon!
Enjoy a festive evening with live music and an uplifting talk by Winona LaDuke and protocol ceremonies by local indigenous leaders as we gather to raise money for Winona's organization, Honor the Earth. Paul "Che oke ten" Wagner (Saanich) will offer Spirit-gifted songs on the Native American flute and the Vashon improvisational jazz ensemble will offer a musical gift from island musicians to Winona. Childcare (see below) will be provided by donation until 9:30.
Doors open to the main event at 6:30. Following the spoken portion of the program (which ends at approximately 9:30) Some'tet will continue with a short set, and subMerge, a Seattle-based art & music collective that pairs house, techno, and electronica with visual and textile arts.
Multiple organizations on Vashon are working hand in hand to make this special event possible, all in support of Honor the Earth. Please join us!
WINONA is an internationally-acclaimed authority on indigenous environmental justice issues, which she balances by leading on-the-ground initiatives that support restorative economies, land rights, renewable energy and local food systems. A graduate of Harvard and Antioch, Winona has lived and worked on the White Earth Reservation in northern Minnesota for decades, and was a two time vice presidential candidate with Ralph Nader for the Green Party. Today, she is growing Winona's Hemp and Heritage Farm into a viable, post-petroleum, agricultural enterprise.
HONOR THE EARTH, co-founded by Winona in 1993, is currently fighting the construction of a Tar Sands oil pipeline routed through the land and waters of northern Minnesota, including the White Earth Reservation and the headwaters of the Mississippi River.
CHILD CARE will be provided onsite by Vashon Green School, sliding scale, during the main program (6:30-9:30). To reserve a spot contact vashongreenschool@gmail.com. All contributions toward childcare will be donated to Honor the Earth.
EVENT ORGANIZERS include: Backbone Campaign, Fable Collections, Open Space for Arts and Community, Vashon Green School, Vashon Heritage Museum, Vashon Nature Center, Vashon Maury Island Land Trust, Strata Associates.
