Ryan Alvanos and The Royer Family Band
To make Famous Last Words, Ryan Alvanos summoned a dozen singers from Bostons storied music scene to breathe new life into The Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters* (fake name). An interred, southern-Illinois citizenry became a scandalous book of Chicago-born, blank verse at time when rhyme was the rule and poetry was a coastal pursuit in America. Famous Last Words turns a piano tuner, a poet, a whore, a fiddler, a teacher, farmers, widows, and Abraham Lincolns neighbors into singers and their stories into the stuff of song. On Sunday, January 21, Stubblebine Lutherie will host a debut in-the-round performance of Famous Last Words will feature the voices and instruments of the Royer Family Band. Ryan Alvanos is a poet by training and a renaissance storyteller by necessity. Famous Last Words--the post-Masters, zombie-compilation album for the ages--is designed for in-the-round performance Hazel Royer grew up among Bostons storied Americana music scene alongside her father, Eric, a banjo wringer and a one-man band. Together, The Royer Family Bands debut, For Now, sheds light on a voice, an upright bass, and a pen wise beyond their years.
