Prelude to a Kiss
"PRELUDE TO A KISS" AT STRAWBERRY THEATRE WORKSHOP
Playwright Craig Lucas' fable of 'for better or for worse' features MJ Sieber, Anastasia Higham, and Galen Joseph Osier in a bizarre love triangle.
Jay Irwin, Broadway World: "Sieber and Higham demonstrate some delectable chemistry together that they manage to turn off in an instant once Rita becomes someone else. But then that chemistry seems instantly transferred over to Sieber and Osier, but in a wonderfully strained and awkward way making the moments between all of them resonate with honesty and realism."
Dusty Somers, City Arts: "Siebers brain seems to jolt with a power surge, delight colliding with despair and rendering him helpless. Higham plays her turnabouts more quietly, the wry puncturing of Peters foibles from their early relationship turning colder and meaner. Both actors are a pleasure to watch."
Directed by Greg Carter, Prelude to a Kiss is Craig Lucas' most popular play; it was nominated for both a Tony Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1990; it was made into a film featuring Meg Ryan and Alec Baldwin in 1992. The story centers around a newlywed husband (Sieber), who has to consider whether his beautiful young wife (Higham) has changed bodies with a terminally ill septuagenarian (Osier) on their honeymoon.
After careful deliberation, Strawberry Theatre Workshop elected to change its fall production Prelude from Reckless, an earlier play by Lucas that potentially had hurtful impact for Deaf and Disabled communities. (Details about that decision16 days before Openingare on the company website at strawshop.org/prelude.html. The new title features the same core artistic team behind Reckless and was ready for a Sep-8 opening at 12th Ave Arts.
Like Reckless, Prelude is a comic fantasy that serves as an allegory for deeper issues. In Reckless, Rachel was stripped of her privilege and thrown into a world of unpredictability that represented the world of homelessness and addiction. In Prelude, Peter must discover if his love for his partner transcends the sudden loss of physical beauty and vitality. It was written as a response to the ravages of AIDS.
