I Hate Hamlet by Paul Rudnick
Andrew Rally, a soap opera star whose series has been cancelled, is astonished to find himself cast as Hamlet for a big-time New York production. Andrew knows his TV fame came more from good looks than talent, and is understandably overwhelmed at the prospect of the most challenging stage role in the English language. To add to Andrews woes, his beautiful girlfriend Deirdre is determined to stay pure until she is sure which, at the rate things are going, might not be till after Shakespeare rises from the dead to write Hamlet, Part II. But just as all seems lost, hope comes from the unlikeliest of places: Andrews real estate agent has rented him John Barrymores old Manhattan apartment and Barrymores ghost appears, ready to tutor Andrew not only about how to play Hamlet but also how to overcome the resistance of even the fairest of maidens. Throw in a fast-talking Hollywood producer who wants Andrew to chuck the stage nonsense for a big-bucks TV series about a schoolteacher with superpowers, and an old flame of Barrymores determined to discover if ghosts can still experience earthy pleasures, and the result is two hours of nonstop laughter.
