Ground Basses for Groundhog Day
Torontos own Baroque-n-Hearts Club Band (Linda Tsatsanis, soprano; Michelle Odorico, baroque violin; Lucas Harris, archlute) perform their inaugural concert on Friday, February 2, 2018, 7:30pm at Heliconian Hall (35 Hazelton Avenue, Toronto) in a program that explores the Baroque eras obsession with the ground bass.
Ground Basses for Groundhog Day showcases the various ways composers approached the use of ground bass lines in the early Baroque. From the whimsical to melancholy, this concert explores all of the stages of love from fixation to elation to betrayal. The program will feature laments of Monteverdi and Purcell, lustful music of Barbara Strozzi, uplifting chaconnes by Matteis and Farinel, melancholic songs of unrequited love by Dowland along with some flirtatious songs to lighten the mood.
Hailed as ravishing (New York Times) and possessing sheer vocal proficiency, a bright, flexible voice, big but controlled, shaded with plentiful color (Boston Globe), soprano Linda Tsatsanis enjoys a career that spans the concert hall, opera stage, movies and television. Violinist, Michelle Odorico is a familiar face in the Toronto early music scene having played with Tafelmusik, Elixir Baroque Ensemble, Windermere String Quartet, Nota Bene, Talisker Players, and Musicians in Ordinary. One of Canadas busiest early music performer, lutenist Lucas Harris performs regularly with Tafelmusik, and has worked with the Toronto Consort, Circa 1500, Apollos Fire, Les Voix Baroques, the Smithsonian Chamber Players, The Harp Consort, Les Délices, and the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra.
