SHARON TATE IN HEAVEN + CHARLIE AND SHARON + SHARON AND ROMAN
Three Sharon Tate plays from New York will play in Los Angeles at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in West Hollywood, January 26-28 for one weekend only in Studio 2.
SHARON TATE IN HEAVEN returns to LA after playing in NY, LA, Long Island, and Miami. This solo play, dubbed "A wonderful First-Person Trip Down Celluloid Memory Lane...captivating performance...charismatic" by Broadway World LA, begins moments after rising actress Sharon Tate's murder in summer 1969 by members of the Charles Manson family in a "Helter Skelter" plan for a race war scheme set in motion by rage over Charlie losing a record contract. in1969, Sharon's fame was peaking as "Future Girl," a beloved actress and model from Dallas, Texas, and a rising star. She was the "Million Dollar Baby" who had a notorious love affair with the complex Polish director Roman Polanski. She'd been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress as Jennifer North in Valley of the Dolls in 1967 and was set to do the film DAY OF THE DOLPHIN opposite Jack Nicholson, with her husband, Roman, directing. This intimate solo play also the first in the trio is imagined as a TV Interview in Heaven and focuses on family, love, and Hollywood, as Sharon teases out the possibilities of what she wants now if "maybe I can be reincarnated." A play for fans and for those new to Sharon.
CHARLIE AND SHARON, the second of the trio, debuts on the West Coast after playing in New York and Long Beach, LI. It is an imaginary encounter in four scenes spanning 1969 to the present day in which the ghost of Sharon confronts the man who masterminded her murder, the notorious Charles Manson. The play has dark and light sides and intensity and humor, as the undead Sharon tries to figure out what is happening with help from the still alive Charlie, as well as making him face his crime by looking her in the face. She's not a zombie, and not exactly a ghost, she just is, and she needs to connect with Charlie, who is rattled by her as well as tantalized. The play takes on love, desire, dreams, and death, and for this LA debut, times with the recent real life death of Manson, placing Charlie and Sharon in the world of this play at end on the same plane where life and death meet and leaving you wondering where it will go from here. SHARON AND ROMAN, the third in the trio, also debuts on the West Coast after playing in New York and Long Beach, LI. The love story of Sharon Tate and the genius director Roman Polanksi began when Sharon met Roman on a comic horror film project they did together in London and Italy. She was the All-American army brat from Texas, who fell in love with acting when she played Juliet in High School, and he was the haunted survivor of the Holocaust in Poland, who made his first movies from camera parts found in garbage cans as a young boy, and they fell deeply and passionately in love. They lived together and she brought him with her back to LA, and they married in 1968. They were on top of the world. Then came Helter Skelter. Sharon was 8 1/2 months pregnant with their child when she was murdered in their LA home at 10500 Cielo Drive, while Roman was in London working on the DAY OF THE DOLPHIN script for her and Jack Nicholson, tragically, never to be realized. In five scenes taking place between 1967 through to 1980 on what would be Sharon's birthday, when Roman is editing his masterpiece TESS for America while in exile for a trauma induced crime involving a minor, this story of love and its challenges, demons and better angels unfolds full circle in the heart's timebends. Together this trio of plays tells the story of Sharon Tate and takes on the most famously violent murder in American history, teasing it out from a 2D black and white of good and evil to a 3D look at how evil and good exist along with shades of grey and how LA LA land is fathoms deep. (A fourth part, SHARON AND MIA, about Sharon and Mia Farrow's friendship, has debuted on the East Coast to form a Quadrilogy of plays. The three plays making this LA tip and each on their own tell a story complete in and of itself and can be watched alone or together, even if the immersion story of the 3 plays is the total experience). These plays speak to American in 2018 and Hollywood when we are asking many questions of ourselves about compassion and power and "Me Too" and who we are.
