Lone Piñon with special guests Red Rocking Chair
Join us for an evening of Northern New Mexco music with a contemporary twist with Lone Piñon and Appalachian and string music with Red Rocking Chair! All to benefit KUPR Community Radio!
"Its a challenge not to clap, tap, or sway along with these rhythms... Lone Piñon highlights the pleasure to be derived from cross cultural relationships. These Días Felices are uplifting." - No Depression
"Exceptionally good." - fRoots Magazine
Lone Piñon is an acoustic conjunto from Northern New Mexico whose music celebrates the diversity of their region's cultural roots. Using violin, accordion, quinta huapangera, bajo sexto, guitarrón, tololoche and vocals in Spanish, English, and Nahuatl, the group has revived and updated the Chicano stringband style that once flourished in New Mexico, bringing a devoted and explosive musicianship to Northern New Mexican polkas and chotes, virtuosic Mexican huapango and son calentano, and classic borderlands conjunto.
The band is centered around the musical partnership of Jordan Wax (fiddle, accordions, vocals) and Noah Martinez (guitarrón, quinta huapanguera, tololoche, bajo sexto)
Special guests Red Rocking Chair will kick of the evening with Appalachian and 'Old Time string music. The group features virtuoso Michel Robert on fiddle, with Barb Belknap adding mandolin rhythm and vocal melodies, while Marc Robert holds it all together with driving acoustic guitar, vocal harmonies, and clawhammer banjo.
The concert is a benefit for community-supported KUPR 99.9 FM, a completely volunteer not-for-profit radio station. All net proceeds from the concert go to KUPR's general operations fund. www.kupr.org
