Paula Higa Dance & ErS
PH Dance & ErS will be presenting three works from the company's repertoire. The first piece is "In/Voluntary Motion", which was premiered in December/2016 at Middlebury College - VT. This work investigates disabilities and disability culture. Paula Higa's choreography takes inspiration from dystonia, a disability characterized by involuntary, often spasmodic movements. Her study of dystonic movements, in collaboration with visual artist Neil Marcus, produced patterns and phrasing for this piece. Higa asserts it is time to see and appreciate difference and be more inclusive by accepting people as they are and welcoming more movement variation into the dance canon. Original music by Patricia Julien. The second piece, "Encounters" will be performed by Higa alongside professional musicians Arthur Brooks and Anthony Santor. "Encounters" is an improvisational work in which two musicians and one dancer meet to perform without a predetermined score. Lastly, the company will be premiering "Blue Rewind". The work investigates the border between reality and imagination. Is the reality the result of our assumptions, perceptions, belief or mass manipulation? It's frightening to realize that our senses are unable to interpret reality. The illusion is the deception of the senses, substituting the real outlook for by a fake one. We see what we think it is! The compositional choreography is tailored with sequences that illustrate rewinds and retrocession. Images that exist, but seconds later, they are no longer there. The message intrinsic in this work reflects on the need of learning from each other's experiences and understanding each others reality. Without this effort, there is little possibility of mutual understanding.
