The Miser
Molières The Miser (LAvare): Money, Women, Money, Rage, Money, Megalomania, Money Rings a Bell?
SAN FRANCISCO, January 29, 2018. Opening on February 15, GenerationTheatre presents the U.S. premiere of a new English translation of Molières The Miser at the Southside Theater, in San Franciscos Fort Mason Center.
The Miser is Harpagon, a man obsessed with money and the power money confers. Our man has an extravagant son who likes fancy clothes, gallivants all over town, and, where brains are concerned, is a sandwich short of a picnic. Our man also has a considerably brighter daughter, who longs to marry his steward and top adviser. Our man has dictatorial power over the whole household. Our man thinks of himself as almost perfect, with a soft spot for much younger women who should succumb to the attraction of his wealth. He is short tempered, generally obnoxious, and prone to firing whoever resists his will. Where power and money are concerned, he behaves like a child, throws tantrums, is devoid of empathy, and believes the law should bend to his whim. And, guess what? No one takes him seriously and everyone makes fun of him.
The story, all names, characters, and incidents portrayed in The Miser are fictitious. In this comedy written in 1668, no identification with actual persons (living or deceased), places, buildings, and products is intended nor should be inferred. The play is performed in English, and not in any manner of strange foreign language, like French, for example.
Parental guidance for toddlers GenerationTheatre cannot be held responsible for the lasting psychological effect on toddlers of exposure to the kind and amount of selfishness and avarice exhibited by Harpagon.
