Cognitive Chemistry
SCHEDULE: 6-7pm: Social Hour w/ refreshments 7-8pm: Dinner 8-9pm: Presentation
ABSTRACT: The future of chemistry is changing. Machine-learning, cognitive computing, and contracted services are moving in. Chemists are as likely to be found in front of screens connected to labs around the world as in lab coats at benches. Knowledge management and computer exploitation of molecular data are the reagents of future chemical reactions. Emphasis shifts from making stuff to knowing what to make. Soon, that too will likely be dictated by computationally derived algorithms. This talk will address technologies that are changing the landscape of chemistry as we've known it.
SPEAKER BIO: Stephen Boyer is a researcher in the interdisciplinary space of chemistry and computer science. He pioneered the use of computers to automatically curate patents and the scientific literature, expanding for the scientific community their understanding and utility of published information in medicine, the physical sciences and intellectual property.
Dr. Boyer has served as an advisor and presenter to numerous national & international organizations. In this capacity, he continues to lecture on technical issues for improving international access to intellectual property and its integration with scientific content.
Dr. Boyer combines ten years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry (Ciba-Geigy / Novartis) with 25 years working in technical and management capacities at IBM. He has authored numerous publications and patents in the areas of new drug syntheses and text- and image-analytics. He holds a B.A. from Temple University in Philadelphia and a Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry from Tufts University.
