A Far Cry in Concert: Words and the Night with Seymour Lipkin
With Words and the Night, A Far Cry explores connections between two groups of composers, separated by centuries.
Palestrina: 2 Motets Mozart: Piano Concerto #13 in C Major with pianist Seymour Lipkin Gesualdo: 2 Madrigals Shoenberg: Verklarte Nacht
Mozart and the 16th century Italian composer Palestrina share the first half of the concert very comfortably together. Both composers valued beauty, symmetry, balance, and the rational mind. Although separated by centuries they speak to each other easily, in a conversation that could form the perfect backdrop to an elegant evening gathering. Mozarts gifts for melody and humor are in full display in his delightful Piano Concerto #13, and A Far Cry is honored to be joined for one performance only by the legendary pianist Seymour Lipkin.
In the second half of the concert, we leave the festive gathering and explore the night in isolation. Gesualdo, the 16th century nobleman, musician, and murderer, wrote some of the most tortured, chromatic, and wildly emotional music one could imagine. Truly the nighttime of the soul. The concert concludes with a kindred spirit, Arnold Schoenberg, exploring from his vantage point 300 years in the future the same issues of guilt, betrayal, and loneliness, but also transformation and redemption. Verklarte Nacht (Transfigured Night) tells the story of two lovers wandering in the moonlight. She makes a shocking confession, and he grants a transcending forgiveness, in one of the most beautiful works ever written for string orchestra.
A student of Rudolf Serkin and Mieczyslaw Horszowski at the Curtis Institute of Music, Seymour Lipkin won the prestigious Rachmaninoff Competition at age 19. He went on to appear with all of America"s "top five" orchestras: The New York Philharmonic (several times), the Boston Symphony (repeatedly), the Philadelphia, Cleveland, and Chicago, as well as many other major American ensembles. Conductors with whom he has collaborated include Serge Koussevitzky, Fritz Reiner, Charles Munch, Leonard Bernstein, Eugene Ormandy, Willian Steinberg, George Szell, and Christopher von Dohnanyi, and more recently with Kenneth Schermerhorn, Gerard Schwarz and George Cleve.
Mr. Lipkin is currently the Artistic Director of the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival, and is on the faculties of both the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music.
