Slavic Winterfest by the Slavyanka Russian Chorus & Iskra Etno (Menlo Park)
Heres a special, post-holiday treat to look forward to! In mid-January, the Slavyanka Russian Chorus presents Slavic Winterfest a concert of Orthodox Christmas hymns, carols, and folk songs in various languages celebrating winter light and cozy houses, troikas and drunken coachmen, blizzards, and the sparkling dazzle of a bright, snow-covered landscape after winter darkness.
This winter concert series will feature three different choir arrangements: The Slavyanka Womens Chorus will perform carols from Romania, Russia, Bulgaria, and Ukraine. The Slavyanka Mens Chorus will perform carols and folk songs from Russia, Ukraine, and Georgia, as well traditional Russian coachmen pieces. The combined Chorus will perform traditional carols from Serbia, Russia, and Ukraine, including two contemporary winter compositions from the renowned Russian composer Georgij Sviridov. For this concert series, the Chorus will be joined by Iskra Etno, a wonderful group of Serbian women whose love of Balkan choral music is highly contagious. In addition to pieces about weddings and marriage, Iskra Etno will also sing garlands about Slavic winter songs and Serbian Christmas.
Tickets were be available online until 12pm on Sunday, 21 January; they will be available thereafter at the door.
