"The Musicians Workbench": A workshop with multi-genre fiddler and teacher Andrew Finn Magill.
Andrew Finn Magill will lead a violin workshop, The Musicians Workbench, from 4:00 6:00 p.m.at the Coron Residence, 6334 NW 33rd Street, Gainesville Florida 32653. Join Finn as he tackles a variety of technical, artistic, creative, and practice-related questions. He will talk about his own creative process, how he practices, and how to improve your listening skills, sharpen your musical instincts, and become a better improviser. The workshop, which will embrace all fiddle genres, is meant to get you out of your box by thinking about harmonic, melodic and accompaniment concepts on your instrument completely differently. Some examples of the workshops Finn has conducted at major camps and festivals are Harmonic Concepts for Violin, Creative Improvisation, and Backing Up Singers.
Bio: Andrew Finn Magill (www.andrewfinnmagill.com), whose primary instrument is the violin, is an American musician who performs and composes in multiple genres, most notably Irish and other Celtic traditions. Magill grew up in Asheville, North Carolina, where his father directs the renowned Swannanoa Gathering at Warren Wilson College. In 2009, he was awarded a Fulbright-mtvU fellowship by the U.S. State Department to produce an album about AIDS with Malawi musician Peter Mawanga. Sales from the studio album Mau a Malawi are invested in programs that keep vulnerable Malawian children in school, where they become empowered through the arts. Finn has toured with dozens of musicians on four continents playing everything from American old-time music to jazz. In 2014, he relocated to Rio de Janeiro to immerse himself in Brazils choro tradition, resulting in creation of his quartet O Finno and, in 2017, the Brazilian Violin Trio with fellow U. S. violinist Ted Falcon and guitarist/composer Nando Duarte. Having been raised at the Swannanoa Gathering, Andrew Finn Magill also is a skilled and enthusiastic instructor who has trained fiddle/violin students for over a decade at music camps around the world.
Advance tickets, $35 plus a small service fee, can be purchased here. Although some tickets may be available at the workshop, this event will be limited to 20 participants. If you do not wish to purchase in advance, we recommend that you call 352-514-5606 (Ken Meyer) as the date approaches to ask about availability.
