DESSA with special guest MONAKR
Chef & The Current presents
Dessa, a member of the Doomtree crew, has made a career out of bucking traditional genre designations from rapping at Lollapalooza to arranging for a full choir. In 2017, she made her orchestral debut, selling out two nights with the world-class Minnesota Orchestra. She also co-wrote an episode of the chart-topping podcast "Welcome to Night Vale", and was tapped by Lin-Manuel Miranda to record the song Congratulations for Billboards #1 album "The Hamilton Mixtape." She also contributed to his recent benefit single for Puerto Rican relief efforts, Almost Like Praying. Her cover of The Mountain Goats song Balance was released in December, as part of the collaborative project I Only Listen To The Mountain Goats, co-created by Night Vale Presents and Merge Records. As a writer, Dessa has contributed to The New York Times Magazine, MPR, the Star Tribune, and literary journals around the country. Her next collection of essays will be published by Dutton Books (Penguin Random House).
MONAKR Passing conversation in a studio. Whispers among friends at a show. The notion of musicians working together on a project is often suggested, yet seldom realized. Chicagos M O N A K R was born from such a notion in the grey of Winter 2014. It is a collaboration featuring Saam Hagshenas and Jonathan Marks of Hey Champ, two time Grammy-nominated vocalist Matthew Santos, and Dan Brunelle of Gemini Club.
See them on the SOUND stage February 23 in Duluth's Historic Arts & Theatre District! Doors open at 9. Show at 9:30!
