Baroque Dance Workshop with Instructor Philippa Waite (sponsored by San Francisco Renaissance Voices)
San Francisco Renaissance Voices is delighted to once again host the internationally-renowned choreographer, performer and teacher of Baroque dance, Philippa Waite for a Baroque Dance Workshop; this workshop is LOW-IMPACT and designed for both the novice and experienced dancer. Ms. Waite studied with Wendy Hilton and taught for her at the annual Baroque Music and Dance Workshops at Stanford University. Ms. Waite is currently guest teacher of Period Movement and Dance at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Cardiff, and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. She is Artistic Director of Consort de Danse Baroque and as such choreographs in the Baroque style for the company's productions; she also teaches, performs and gives lecture-demonstrations throughout the UK and abroad. The workshop will include instruction in some of the basic dance steps and arm motions in the main Baroque dance rhythms: bourée & menuet in the morning session and sarabande, chaconne & gigue in the afternoon. Experienced students will be taught more complex steps required for ballroom and theatre dances. Extracts from choreographed and extant notated dances may be taught. However, the emphasis will be on the style, technique and performance of the dances, and not on the ability to memorise them.
Schedule: 8:30-9:00 am - Sign-in 9:00 am-12:30 pm (9-9:30 Warm-Up, 9:30-12:30 Class Begins) The morning session will concentrate on typical step variations found in bourées and menuets. 12:30-2:00 pm Lunch: Not provided; there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance - or bring your own; beverages will be provided 2:00-6:00 pm - Class Resumes: The afternoon session will concentrate on steps found in the sarabande & chaconne as well as the gigue and will conclude with a short Lecture-Demonstration, given by Ms. Waite and advanced dancers, to highlight some of the dance rhythms found in a typical "classical suite". 7:30- 9:00 pm - Renaissance Dance Mini-Course: If you can only come to the Baroque day, but would also like some exposure to Renaissance dance, join us for this Mini Crash-Course in Renaissance Dance with Instructor Judith Kennedy.
