The Tyranny of Realism, a workshop by Playwright Prince Gomolvilas
This playwriting lecture/workshop will examine contemporary examples of plays that push the boundaries of the theatrical form. With film and television hewing so closely to the rigid parameters of realism, theatre remains a place where writers are able to experiment with wild abandon, while still telling stories that are grounded in recognizable human struggles and emotions. After studying short theatre pieces ("flash plays" are in fashion nowadays), participants will dream up scenes in the room and start writing towards wherever their imagination takes them.
Prince Gomolvilas has written many plays, including The Theory of Everything, which won the PEN Center USA Literary Award for Drama and was published by Dramatic Publishing. His work has been produced around the United States, as well as in Canada, Singapore, Thailand, and the U.K. He is currently working on a new-play commission for Geva Theatre Center (Rochester, NY).www.princegomolvilas.com
