Event
Charpentier in Rome/Agave Baroque with Danielle Sampson, soprano
[DUE TO ILLNESS, JENNIFER PAULINO HAS HAD TO CANCEL. AGAVE SENDS GET WELL WISHES TO JENNIFER, AND IS PLEASED TO WELCOME THE EQUALLY SPECTACULAR DANIELLE SAMPSON, FROM SEATTLE!]
In the 17th century, musicians from all over Europe flocked to Italy to learn the secrets of the Italian style. Marc-Antoine Charpentier, the brilliant French composer, traveled to Rome, where he studied with the progenitor of oratorio, Giacomo Carissimi. Italians such as Giovanni Battista Lulli ( Jean-Baptiste Lully) brought the new style to the French court. Agave Baroque offers works from the French circle, including motets and lamentations by both Carissimi and Charpentier; a motet by Antonia Bembo (an Italian in France); a triosonata by the remarkable Elisabeth Claude Jacquet de la Guerre; a flashy aria by Louis-Nicolas Clérambault; and Francois Couperin's famous 'Apothéose de Corelli', a delightful fantasy in which the two giants, Lully and Arcangelo Corelli, meet in the fictional 'Parnasse' to create a new perfection in music'. Join Agave featuring the "bright gleam and supple phrasing" of soprano soloist Jennifer Paulino.
Complimentary wine reception follows the concert.
