From the Indian Ocean to Staten Island, the Sri Lankan Dance Academy of New York brings the amazing artistry and fanciful costumes of their homeland to the stage. Representing Brooklyn, the magical sound culture of Sandaraa featuring internationally acclaimed vocalist Zeb Bangash and composer/clarinetist Michael Winograd take Pakistani & Afghani music into new realms, melding it with Balkan music and other influences. And hailing from the most diverse locale on the planet, Queens-based Grupo Rebolu gets the crowd dancing to the Afro-Colombian beat. Travel the world with the sonic guidebook written by these proud New Yorkers.

Featuring:

Redobles de Cultura

Redobles de Cultura (RDCNYC) is a collective of three top New York City-based Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba practitioners: Julia Gutiérrez-Rivera, Nicky Caja Dura Laboy and Nelson Matthew González. They are proud members of today's "new" and younger generation of Bomberos, cultural workers and educators. Collectively, the RDCNYC ensemble has 50 years of teaching and performing experience, as part of several notable Bomba and Plena ensembles, including Los Pleneros de la 21, Alma Moyo, Legacy Women, Ilu Aye, Yerba Buena and more. Each member-- born into the culture and traditional practices of Puerto Rico and the Afro-Caribbean-- embodies the ancestral knowledge of their elders. Throughout the years, they have toured internationally to: Canada, Cuba, Mexico, Germany, Thailand, Singapore, France, Africa, the Dominican Republic and more.

Working alongside each other for more than 15 years with other groups, the trio officially came together as RDCNYC in 2016 with a mission to engage audiences of all ages and backgrounds...this time through the eyes of new generation DiaspoRicans, who can pair the foundational knowledge of their elders with the aesthetics, styles and realities of urban and diaspora perspectives. RDC is coming off a recent breakout US tour (Fall 2017) in which they were featured in 26 concerts/workshops over 9 states.

Sri Lankan Dance Academy of New York

The Sri Lankan Dance Academy of New York seeks to preserve the significant cultural and artistic heritage of Sri Lanka in America through both traditional and contemporary drumming and dancing. Founded in 1992 by Tanya DeSilva, the program is led by internationally recognized professional Kandyan dancer Dilhan Pinnagoda and drum master, Uthpala Eroshan. Specializing in Kandyan (up country) dance, SLDA boasts three satellite schools (Staten Island, Queens & New Jersey) that teach individuals ages 5-25, a pre-professional company and performing ensemble which has performed Kandyan, Low Country and other traditional dance/music forms on citywide and national stages: National Folk Festival  Greensboro, North Carolina; Montana Folk Festival; Drums Along the Hudson; Richmond Folk Festival; Bangor Folk Festival; Lowell Folk Festival; and WNYCs Greenspace. As cultural ambassadors and highly adept educators, SLDAs gurus and dancers consistently impress new audiences with their artistry and skill.

Sandaraa

Creating soundscapes that transport listeners from Balochistan to Brooklyn by way of the Balkans, Sandaraa (meaning "song" in the Pashto language) is an exciting collaboration between internationally renowned Pakistani vocalist Zeb Bangash and klezmer clarinetist/composer Michael Winograd. Together with a retinue of leading Brooklyn musicians, the band takes inspiration from legendary recording artists such as Sabzal Saami, Beltoon and Haji Saifudin in creating new music that synthesizes infectious rhythms, ecstatic modal melisma, technical virtuosity, and a global . Michael and Zeb discovered an unexpected affinity between their traditions through a chance encounter at a performance, and have used this eureka moment to create a spark for an adventuresome project exploring trans-Eurasian sonic possibilities. Through the support of the Center for Traditional Music and Dance, Sandaraa has received major grants from the prestigious MAP Fund, Chamber Music America, and Puffin Foundation.

Grupo Rebolu

Featuring some of the finest Colombian musicians in the United States, Grupo Rebolus founders Ronald Polo (vocals/gaida), Morris Canate (percussion), and Johanna Castaneda (vocals/cuatro) join talents to lead an ensemble that celebrates the musical traditions of Colombias Caribbean coast. The band creates an infectious mix of dance rhythms that combine the traditional drumming of Colombias African heritage with the unique sound of the indigenous gaita - a large end-blown flute with a duck-quill reed.
