La Befana: An Italian Tradition
La Befana, one of Italy's oldest and most celebrated holiday traditions, is a legend older than Santa Claus. All are welcome at this celebration of generosity, community, and Italian culture.
You and your children will enjoy an afternoon of special activities at Snug Harbor, including crafts like drawing, coloring, and making your own La Befana and broomstick. Learn a traditional Italian dance and hear the story of La Befana--and of course if you're good, you'll receive a gift from La Befana herself!
La Befana is know to bring gifts for the children at the close of the holiday season. According to legend, La Befana was visited by the three wise men in search of the Christ child. She declined their invitation to join them but later regretted her decision and set off on her own, giving gifts to all children in case one was the Christ child. The tradition of La Befana appears to incorporate other pre-Christian popular elements as well, adapted to Christian culture and related to the celebration of the New Year.
Bring the whole family and join us for this festive event!
This event is supported in part by the Richmond County Savings Foundation and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.
