BACH FESTIVAL - LUTE - NIGEL NORTH
OUR LADY OF FATIMA BACH FESTIVAL
July 11, 2013 7:30PM NIGEL NORTH - LUTENIST
British lutenist Nigel North has inspired audiences as soloist, accompanist and ensemble musician for decades! His natural talent has kept him in high demand performing regularly with Early Music gurus like Christopher Hogwood, Trevor Pinnock, Andrew Manze, Roy Goodman and Emma Kirby!
Mr. North has also remained a committed instructor teaching across all of Europe and in 1999 was appointed Professor of Lute at the "Early Music Institute" of Indiana University. Nigel North will commence our "BACH FESTIVAL" with the intimate and sonorous works for unaccompanied Lute by J.S. Bach as well as Bach's contemporary lutenist and composer Sylvius Leopold Weiss (1687-1750).
Bach met Weis through his son W.F. Bach and was immediately taken with Weis' talent in both composition and improvisation. Weis and Bach "paired off" in a friendly matchup in improvisation with Weis on the Lute and Bach at the Harpsichord. Witness Johann Reichardt describes the event thus:
"Anyone who knows how difficult it is to play harmonic modulations and good counterpoint on the lute will be surprised and full of disbelief to hear that Weiss, the great lutenist, challenged J. S. Bach, the great harpsichordist and organist, at playing fantasies and fugues."
Prepare to be "dazzled"!
