OPENING EXHIBIT: FLAMENCA NY IN CHICAGO
FLAMENKA NY is a collection of portraits from an ongoing project by NYC-based photographer Angelica Escoto. The subjects are all female flamenco artists who, by performing, teaching or living in New York City, form part of the New York flamenco scene. "I would like to preserve their passion for self-expression through this collection of portraits. This exhibit will hopefully serve to increase the exposure of New Yorks Flamenco community to others." - Photographer Angelica Escoto
Why FLAMENKA NY? My passion for flamenco has inspired me to follow and try to capture the essence of this art form through my photography. My goal for this project is to tell the story of passion, strength and personal expression. I decided to create FLAMENKA NY after being inspired by the flamenco community in Sevilla, Spain. Back in New York, I invited each of these female artists into a studio for a one-on-one photo session in order to capture each individual artist. I hope that these portraits (and others to come) will serve as a channel to bring the artists and their communities together in one space at the same time.
FLAMENKA NY was first exhibited at Splashlight Studios in Soho New York on March 29th, 2012.
