Founded in 1965, LPA has nearly 200 employees with offices in Irvine, Roseville, and San Diego, Calif. The firm provides services in architecture, sustainability, planning, interior design, landscape architecture, engineering, and graphics. There is no "Sustainability Director," at LPA. Instead, more than 80% of the professionals are LEED accredited, including the Human Resources Director, CFO, and several other support staff. With extensive experience in public and private architecture, LPA designs a diversity of facilities that span from K-12 schools, colleges and universities, to corporate and civic establishments.
The designers at LPA believe that sustainability is too important to be treated merely as a score card. It is neither additive nor subtractive, but must essentially become part of a building's DNA. As a result, the firm added engineering to its offering of services in 2006.
"Engaging engineers who are involved in the design process from the outsetand share the same philosophyis the only way to create real sustainability, where buildings do more with less," says President Dan Heinfeld. "The results create buildings that work better for the people who use them, while requiring less energy, water, square footage and materials."
LPA's presentation will focus on the synergies that exist between design excellence and sustainability and how an integrated process promotes collaboration between architects and engineers.
