***EVENT SCOOP: Gilbert Castellanos & Arlene Damasco Present ART MEETS JAZZ, a new series featuring unique salutes to the greatest legends of jazz: Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughan, Clifford Brown, and on January 6, 2018 - HORACE SILVER! Southern California artists who support and capture the vibrant San Diego jazz scene utilizing various mediums - photography, watercolor, charcoal, pastels, sketch, etc. - will showcase their original work each night. This series merges music and art to highlight multiple-perspectives - and the talented musicians, that create the heartbeat of jazz in Americas Finest City.
**THE BAND:
GILBERT CASTELLANOS (Band Leader/Trumpet) Leading the band is none other than virtuoso trumpeter and Downbeat Magazine American Master Gilbert Castellanos. Artistic Director of the San Diego Symphony's "Jazz at The Jacobs," and Director of the major art institution's inaugural big band, the Jazz @ The Jacobs Orchestra, Castellanos knows what it takes to make a jazz series a success. He has been a driving force in the San Diego jazz scene for two decades, having been awarded Best Jazz Artist six times by the San Diego Music Awards, as well as Artist of the year in 2013. He was recently recognized as a 2017 Jazz Hero by the national Jazz Journalists Association. Castellanos is host to the city's longest running weekly jazz jam at Panama 66 at the San Diego Museum of Art, and is a renowned music educator and champion of the next generation of jazz, curating a weekly Young Lions Series at Panama 66/San Diego Museum of Art. He served as Artistic Director for the International Academy of Jazz, and is launching a new jazz venture, fulfilling a longtime dream - The Young Lions Jazz Conservatory. Castellanos continues to find new avenues to keep jazz alive and well!
SAM HIRSH (Piano) At the age of 4, Sam began playing the piano. Influenced by his father, a jazz saxophonist, he began playing jazz his freshman year of high school; one year later, he was working professionally. Sam was a regular on the Portland music scene, leading his own piano trio and working with various local artists, including his father's quintet, before moving to Los Angeles to attend USC Thornton School of Music. He graduated in Jazz Studies in 2012 and is an active member of the Los Angeles jazz scene. You can find him playing at venues including: The Lighthouse Cafe, Vibrato Jazz Grill, Blue Whale, Beverly Hilton, LACMA Jazz Night etc.. Some of his notable performances include: Mezzrow Jazz Club (NYC), Side Door Jazz Club (Old Lyme, CT), the Newport Jazz Party (Newport, CA), Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society (Half Moon Bay, CA) and the Sound Room (Oakland, CA). He has performed with various acts taking him all over California, Oregon, New York City, Taiwan and Bolivia, including: Walter Afanasieff, Luca Alemanno, Gilbert Castellanos, Graham Dechter, Joe Farnsworth, Henry "Skipper" Franklin, Kenny G, Albert Tootie Heath, Christopher Hollyday, Bill Holman, Kevin Kanner, Roy McCurdy, Melissa Morgan, Tom Scott, Katie Thiroux, and so many more. He has studied piano with: Alan Pasqua, Otmaro Ruiz, Russell Ferrante, Benny Green, Tamir Hendelman, Randy Porter, and George Mitchell.
RYAN SHAW (Drums) Ryan Shaw began his musical pursuits at the age of five on piano. By age 8, he began studying with Steve Noyd on percussion. After getting his first drum set at the age of 10, he began playing at his church regularly while participating in his school's Band and Jazz Band. Ryan then moved with his family to San Diego, California where he began attending Poway High School and participating in their Marching and Jazz Bands. He was also selected as the drummer for the SCSBOA Honor Jazz Band in 2013. Ryan is now pursuing his Jazz Studies degree at the University of Southern California, studying under Peter Erskine. Outside of school, Ryan performs regularly with Gilbert Castellanos and Joshua White, and has had the opportunity to perform with Bob Sheppard, Bob McChesney, Graham Dechter, Rob Lockhart, Joshua White, Holly Hofmann, Mike Wofford and more. Ryan has also had the opportunity to study with Jeff Hamilton, Peter Erskine, Roy McCurdy, Kevin Kanner, Dan Schnelle, Duncan Moore, Mike Holguin, Bryan Taylor, Lance Beckford, Paul Casey, and Steve Noyd. He is a member of the inaugural San Diego Symphony Jazz @ The Jacobs Orchestra directed by Gilbert Castellanos, and has performed at many of the hottest Southern California Jazz clubs including the Blue Whale, Catalina, Vitellos, Vibrato, and Spaghettini.
DEAN HULETT (Upright Bass) Dean Pop Pop Hulett, the line-up's upright bass player, started playing the double bass at the age of eight. In 2001, he had the pleasure of playing with such musicians as Mark Lomax, James Gaiters, Bobby Floyd, Edwin Bayard, Hamilton Hardin, Jerome Jennings and many others. Dean has also shared the stage with well-known musicians such as members of the Marsalis family, toured with Delfeayo Marsalis, Derek Gardner, Wycliffe Gordon, and can be found on recordings with Azar Lawrence and others. Locally you can catch him jamming with Gilbert Castellanos, Irving Flores, Rob Thorsen, Joshua White and more!
ROBERT DOVE (Tenor Sax) Robert Dove earned his Bachelors Degree in Jazz Studies from UNC-Greensboros Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program. Upon finishing his degree, Robert moved to San Diego from Ohio in 2013, where he began his professional career. Dove has had the opportunity to perform at a multitude of venues in the United States, Canada, and Europe. He has performed and recorded alongside John Ellis, Marcus Roberts, Lee Konitz, Wessel Warmdaddy Anderson, Jason Marsalis, Donny McCaslin, Peter Bernstein, Jim Rupp, Bobby Floyd, Byron Stripling, Gene Walker, and other prominent musicians. He is well versed in all aspects of jazz, and uses this facility to arrange, compose, perform, and educate with multiple groups throughout Southern California. He currently leads his own group, the Robert Dove Quartet, featuring his debut album Paradigm Shift featuring Gilbert Castellanos and Marshall Hawkins, which highlights the influences of jazz royalty, but with a more modern approach. In addition to this, Robert also works as a founding member in the Gaslamp Quarter Jazz Orchestra, co-leads the weekly jazz jam at The Ken. He has performed as a sideman with many other groups including The Lorraine Castellanos Sextet, The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble, The Jazz @ The Jacobs Jazz Orchestra, The Gilbert Castellanos Big Band, and many more.
