36 Blocks (Guild Hall)
The year was 1921, and most of the town's residents were preparing for the month of May's Declaration Day parade festivities. There were floats, jugglers, amusement rides, the best darn food one could eat and happiness and smiles found on almost everyone who walked down Greenwood Avenue. Dick Rowland couldn't take the day off to escort his girlfriend Estelle to the parade. Instead, he found himself riding in an elevator at Renberg's Department store to use the men's room. See, people of color were forbidden to use public restrooms. Sarah Page, a young white elevator operator was working that May 30th. "I remember her screaming", he said "and then everyone yelling at me". "I didn't do anything but that wasn't gone make a bit of difference", was it? "I ran as fast as I could......but they were coming"...
