Anna Tivel in Santa Fe
Anna Tivel brings a raft of beautiful songs with brine-soaked images of Pacific Northwest tidepools, oceans, and the birds that wheel above them in the gray skies. -No Depression
Anna Tivel has spent many quality hours in a Dodge Caravan repeating lyrical lines over and over until the words fall in time with the windshield wipers, or until the gas light comes on. A touring artist with a deep love of quiet stories, a particularly expressive timbre, and a strong lyrical sense, she is a recent winner of the Kerrville Songwriting Contest. Raised in the forest and farmland of rural Washington, she now calls Portland, Oregon home. Her songs reflect both the stark colors of small town life and the hard, sharp lines of the city. Her deeply personal albumBefore Machines was hailed by No Depression as raw, yet superbly composed and executed, intelligent and deeply expressive. Glide Magazine called her second effort,Heroes Waking Up, "vastly expressive in its stark beauty. Her latest and most fully realized release, Small Believer, was written while Tivel was touring, but also between shifts at the odd waitressing job, or driving Meals on Wheels. She has an extraordinarily keen eye for recasting the images shes seen, so that a homeless man drawing comfort each day while sitting and watching a building go up, brick by brick, becomes the song Riverside Hotel. A chance conversation with a neighbor, also a waitress, who makes an empty promise becomes Last Cigarette. Each image or moment that burned itself into Tivels memory becomes a launching pad for a larger story that she threads into song, a spinning wheel of time and movement that defines Tivels passage.
