Lisa Geduldig and El Rio Present... Comedy Returns to El Rio!
Comedy Returns to El Rio! is a popular monthly comedy show (every 3rd Thursday of the month) co-produced by Kung Pao Kosher Comedy's Lisa Geduldig and El Rio. The show, now in its 9th year, takes place at El Rio in San Francisco's Mission District and showcases an eclectic, multicultural mix of intelligent, progressive comedians from the Bay Area and beyond. Were wrapping up the year on Thursday, December 21, with Marga Gomez, Will Durst, Aundre the Wonderwoman, David Lawrence Hawkins, and Lisa Geduldig.
Marga Gomez was named 2017 "Best Comedian" by the Bay Guardian/48 Hills readers poll. She has appeared on LOGOs One Night Stand Up, Showtime's "Latino Laugh Festival, Comedy Centrals Out There" and HBOs Comic Relief at the invitation of Robin Williams who called her Amazing a lesbian Lenny Bruce. She has been a guest on leading comedy podcasts Marc Marons "WTF," "The Keith and The Girl Show, and Kevin Allison's "Risk." Her comic style has been described as deliciously cheeky and incendiary by the New York Times and salaciously surreal by the San Francisco Chronicle. The SF Weekly named Gomez one of 2016s Artists To Watch. Huffington Post named her an "Agent of Change" in 2015. She is also a GLAAD Award winner, a Theater LA "Ovation Award" winner, and multiple winner of The Bay Area Reporter's "Bestie Award" for comedy. Her screen roles include Sphere (Warner Brothers) and Tracy Takes On(HBO) and Sense8 on Netflix. Her latest solo play "Latin Standards" will have its San Francisco premiere January 2018 at Brava Theater. www.margagomez.com Marga's photo by: Kent Taylor
Will Durst has been called by The New York Times "quite possibly the best political comedian working in the country today." He is a 5-time Emmy nominee, has been fired by PBS three times, told jokes in 14 countries, racked up 7 nominations for Stand Up of the Year, and his 800+ TV appearances include Letterman, HBO, Showtime, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News, the BBC and many more. The critically acclaimed Off-Broadway run of his one-man show, The All American Sport of Bipartisan Bashing, The All American Sport of Bi-Partisan Bashing was subsequently turned into a book of the same name by Ulysses Press. His hobbies include pinball, the never-ending quest for the perfect cheeseburger, and his heroes remain the same as when he was 12: Thomas Jefferson and Bugs Bunny, not necessarily in that order. Durst's performances are made possible by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Hes also a columnist, author, and sworn enemy to all tyrants foreign and domestic: these days with an emphasis on the latter. www.WillDurst.com
David Lawrence Hawkins has been a creative presence in San Francisco since his first play, Beach Party on The Black Lagoon was produced by Life on The Water at Fort Mason in 1991. He has produced original work as a painter, playwright, illustrator, and stand up comedian and has appeared at the SF Punchline, the Comedy Store, The Queer Arts Festival, SF Pride, Trannyshack, and Klubstitute. David is currently assembling 7 years worth of poetry, cartoons and philosophy into his first book entitled "Low Budget, High Concept." He is the thinking person's dummy.
Aundré the Wonderwoman has garnered a reputation as a solid talent dishing up content-based comedy ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime. This anti-death penalty lawyer by day/comedian by night is a keen observer of human behavior who will have you laughing at everything from disability to the politics of the day. Her credits include The Funniest Woman in Half Moon Bay, Oaklands Funniest Comic on the Strip, and Winner of the Inaugural Russian River Comedy Competition. She was a semi-finalist in the 2005 San Francisco International Comedy Competition and in 2008 received the Stand Up For Justice Award for her work against the death penalty.
Lisa Geduldig is a local comic and comedy producer who's the creator, producer, and MC of a variety of comedy shows including Kung Pao Kosher Comedy™ (celebrating its 25th Anniversary on December 23-25!); Funny Girlz: A Smorgasbord of Women Comedians; The Color of Funny: A Multi-Cultural Comedy Show; and A Muslim, A Mormon, and A Jew Walk into A Bar: The Comedy of Religion.
