WHEN THEY CALL YOU A TERRORIST: A BLACK LIVES MATTER MEMOIR - Patrisse Khan Cullors in conversation with Charlene Carruthers
We're honored to host Patrisse Khan-Cullors in conversation with Charlene Carruthers. Khan-Cullors will be discussing and signing her memoir, WHEN THEY CALL YOU A TERRORIST: A BLACK LIVES MATTER MEMOIR.

From one of the co-founders of the Black Lives Matter movement comes a poetic memoir and reflection on humanity. Necessary and timely, Patrisse Cullors' story asks us to remember that protest in the interest of the most vulnerable comes from love. Leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement have been called terrorists and a threat to America. But in truth, they are loving women whose life experiences have led them to seek justice for those victimized by the powerful. In this meaningful, empowering account of survival, strength, and resilience, Patrisse Cullors, with co-author asha bandele, seek to change the culture that declares innocent black life expendable.

Patrisse Khan-Cullors is an artist, organizer, and freedom fighter from Los Angeles. Cofounder of Black Lives Matter, she is also a performance artist, Fulbright scholar, popular public speaker, and the 2017 Sydney Peace Prize recipient.

Charlene Carruthers is a strategist, writer and a leading organizer in todays Black liberation movement. A Black queer feminist with more than a dozen years of experience in racial justice and feminist and youth leadership development movement work, Charlene is the founding national director of the Black Youth Project 100 (BYP100). She was recognized as one of the 10 most influential African Americans in The Root 100, one of Ebony Magazine's "Woke 100," and an Emerging Power Player in Chicago magazine. She is the 2017 recipient of the YWCA's Dr. Dorothy I. Height Award. Major media outlets from the BBC and MSNBC to legacy Black media institutions like Ebony and Essence magazines have highlighted her work and perspective on current events and issues affecting marginalized communities. Charlenes forthcoming book, The Freedom Pages, an unapologetically Black, queer, and feminist guide to movement building, will be published in the fall of 2018.

This event is co-sponsored by Black Lives Matter Chicago. Representatives from BLM Chicago will attend this event so that attendees can learn more about how to get involved.

Black Lives Matter Chicago is an intersectional vehicle that values Black people and our right to self-determination. We fight for justice with families most impacted, while working to create just and equitable systems. We work to end state violence and criminalization of Black communities by deconstructing white supremacist, capitalist, patriarchy.
