Duel & Dance NYE 2018
This New Year's Eve, we're bringing together two of Vancouver's most unique and exciting scenes: swordplay and fusion dance!
Join Academie Duello and Coalescence Fusion Dance for an evening of fun activities, great music, awesome conversations, and a chance to try out both swordplay and partner dance at one event!
Heres some of whats in store:
- A chance to experience the thrill of swordplay, in a safe and fun environment, guided by some of the world's best instructors.
- Fusion dance lessons for the new and experienced.
- Ringing in the new year with a steel sword in hand for sword pros new and old, along with some sword fighting visitors.
- Sweet fusion dance music and awesome dance partners till the wee hours.
- Learn to sabre a bottle of champagne with a real sword!
- Compete in our sword candle snuffing competition.
- Watch dance and sword showcases after midnight!
- Relax in our cuddle spaces.
- Escape to our introvert friendly lounge.
- Play a board game with friends.
- Enjoy yummy snacks and desserts.
- A glass of champagne at midnight and a cash bar for beers, ciders, and mixed drinks.
- A welcoming and easy going crowd with lots to do even if you just want to be a wall flower (Your non-sword/dance friends will have fun too!)
All this at the candlelit Academie Duello from 8pm till 3am.
What's swordplay all about?
Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) includes the swordplay of medieval and renaissance Europe including rapiers, the sword of the musketeer, the two-handed sword of the knight, swords and shields, quarterstaffs and more.

What's fusion dance all about?
Fusion dancing derives its name from the intermingling of partner dances and genres. Its boundary-defying and lets dancers express their own style while still following fundamental dance principles. There are no requirements for gender roles and many people switch between lead and follow, even in the same song!
