Beyond Therapy
Wombat Theatre presents the comic genius of Christopher Durang's most popular play: Beyond Therapy.

Prudence is 30 years old and has 2 cats so when she answers a personal ad, she doesn't expect someone like Bruce. She definitely doesn't anticipate his gay lover (Bob) or his doll wielding therapist (Charlotte).  Despite the protests of her own therapist and former lover (Stuart), she dates him anyway. Bruce just wants Prudence ("and occasionally Bob"), Bob wants to express his anger about Bruce's dating, Stuart wants to get back together with Prudence and Charlotte wants everyone to express themselves and go to a disco. When they all converge at the same restaurant, the psychological revelations and emotional fireworks really begin.

Beyond Therapy is a play about the end of the 70's and people trying to navigate between the sexual revolution, the rise of feminism and the decline of marriage. At a time when therapy became a fad second only to pet rocks, Durang takes the position that "if you take psychological suffering in the right frame of mind, you can find the humor in it".

"Filled with off beat laugh lines, wry observations on the contemporary urban psyche and situations that range from farcical to absurd."

       - Women's Wear Daily.

"One of the funniest and most original playwrights at work.  His "Beyond Therapy" could be considered his "Alice in Wonderland" with the stunning Sigourney Weaver at large in a world run by psychiatrists  this whirligig of a showtrips merrily along."
     Edith Oliver, New Yorker

"One of the funniest plays I've seen in years"
Rex Reed, New York Daily News

"Beyond Therapy" offers the best therapy of all: guaranteed laughter.  Durang's plot, which has more bounces than a pinball game, goes from the unexpected to the unpredicted providing two hours of hilarious surprises.
      Gerald Clarke, Time Magazine

"[Durang] is a serious young writer who can't help thinking comically.  "Beyond Therapy"[is] zany in a particularly intelligent waywickedly funny, terribly slanted, and essentially true.
     Dan Sullivan, LA Times
